Blood magic is one of the dirtiest activities in the world of Dragon Age. In the first and second parts, the main character could take on the specialization of a blood mage, but in The Veilguard this opportunity will not be available - as BioWare considered, there was too large a plot gap in the lore between blood magic and the protagonist.
Lead writer Patrick Weekes said:
"Blood magic is unlikely to come back [as a specialization for the protagonist] because we've changed its nature: now it's not just a character enhancement, it's the key to a lot of nasty things that we don't think protagonists should be doing.
I think blood magic can be ethically neutral if you only use your own blood. But after blood magic turned out to be a crucial part of mind control and demon chaining in Dragon Age 2 and Inquisition, then it's just not the road the protagonist should be going down at this point.
And that's a shame because using your own health to conjure new magic is an interesting gameplay trade-off for people who like that balance of risk and reward. Maybe we'll find other ways to introduce that balance. But not through blood magic in this protagonist."
According to Dragon Age lore, blood magic is indeed considered a particularly serious offense - it is extremely condemned by the Church, and the fear of blood magic is so strong that it even influenced non-magical sciences like anatomy.
Therefore, there is an opinion that in the first and second Dragon Age, there was a significant plot gap between the world around and the protagonist-blood mage - they say, those around him reacted too little and sluggishly when the hero used such stigmatized magic.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is due out this fall on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series.
