Bungie Plans to Rebuild Destiny and Restore Vaulted Destiny 2 Content

Destiny 2

Bungie has outlined a new direction for Destiny and Marathon, with plans to restore previously vaulted Destiny 2 content while expanding Marathon beyond the limits of its original extraction shooter formula.

Studio Head Poria Torkan and Marathon General Manager Josh Deane shared the plans as part of Bungie's latest studio update, acknowledging that the company needs to rebuild player trust and sharpen its focus.

Vaulted Destiny 2 Content Is Coming Back

One of Bungie's biggest commitments is to restore vaulted campaigns, destinations, and raids to Destiny 2. The returning content will be available to all Destiny 2 players.

“All of this is to say, we are not done with Destiny.”

Bungie explained that changes made since Beyond Light mean the team needs to update lighting, encounters, combatants, and underlying systems so older areas meet the current technical and gameplay standards of Destiny 2.

There is no release schedule yet. Bungie plans to share more about its unvaulting work over the coming months.

The studio sees restoration as the first step toward a broader future for Destiny, including new stories and games. Bungie also wants to bring the series back toward its focus on mystery, discovery, and Guardians facing large-scale threats together.

Marathon Will Expand Beyond Extraction PvPvE

Bungie stressed that Marathon was never intended to replace Destiny. While the game received a strong critical response and found a dedicated audience, the studio admitted that it did not reach as many players as Bungie had hoped.

The plan now is to expand Marathon into a deeper survival experience instead of keeping it tightly constrained by its original genre. Bungie wants to support cooperative PvE, competitive PvP, and PvPvE, giving players more ways to interact with the world.

The next major step is the Symbiosis update on December 8, 2026. Bungie says it will introduce Marathon's first permanent PvE experience alongside a new Runner shell, refreshed Perimeter zone, social space and firing range, experimental Team Deathmatch mode, and improvements for new players.

A smaller update is scheduled for October 6, 2026, with progression and economy resets, refreshed rewards, and other live-game improvements. Bungie has also abandoned a strict seasonal schedule to give the team more flexibility when developing and testing larger updates. More details are available in the official Marathon development update.

Bungie Wants to Rebuild Player Trust

Bungie's new leadership also addressed the studio itself. After more than 30 years of making games, Torkan and Deane said recent years brought lost player trust, lost colleagues, and too many competing priorities.

The studio says it has simplified its focus, moved more decisions closer to individual development teams, and changed how it measures success to put greater emphasis on player satisfaction.

Going forward, Bungie's main commitments are to strengthen Destiny's long-term future while restoring its past, continue evolving Marathon, increase transparency around development priorities, and communicate more consistently when plans change.
