Activision and Infinity Ward have officially announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, launching October 23. For the first time in years, the game skips Xbox One and PlayStation 4 entirely, while also marking Call of Duty's return to Nintendo hardware — the first appearance on a Nintendo platform since Call of Duty: Ghosts on Wii U in 2013.
Story
The campaign is set on the Korean Peninsula, where a new North Korean leader launches an invasion of South Korea, triggering a global conflict. Players control Pak, a young South Korean soldier experiencing war for the first time. Captain Price also returns, operating outside Task Force 141 with his own crew. Missions take place not only in Korea but also in New York, Paris, and Mumbai. The setting has already sparked discussion, with some journalists and players questioning whether a full-scale inter-Korean war scenario may be too sensitive for the region.
Multiplayer
The game launches with 12 maps for 6v6, new Gunfight arenas, and large-scale battles combining infantry and vehicles. A new mode called Kill Block features a constantly shifting battlefield with hundreds of possible cover, passage, and sightline configurations.
Gunplay
Infinity Ward has fully rebuilt the shooting system, unifying bullet trajectory, weapon animations, character stance, camera behavior, audio, field of view, and target visibility into a single interconnected system. The goal is more realistic and predictable gunfights with no random spread or unexplained misses.
Other Features
The new Gunny system lets players quickly assemble effective weapon loadouts for specific playstyles using already-unlocked attachments. The prestige system returns with two options — standard and classic. Classic mode resets some progress and locks certain customization elements in exchange for faster leveling and unique rewards. The DMZ extraction mode also returns, now with dynamic weather and shifting enemy placement during matches.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23 on PC (Steam, Microsoft Store, Battle.net), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch 2.
