Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is out today, October 15, on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. It’s a 2D action-exploration game from Evil Empire, the studio that made Dead Cells’ post-launch content, developed together with KONAMI and Motion Twin.
The game arrives in Castlevania’s 40th anniversary year. It keeps the Gothic setting and whip combat the series is known for, but puts them in a colorful art style and adds some new systems.
The story is set in Paris in 1499, 23 years after Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. You play as Rose Belmont, Trevor Belmont’s daughter, while monsters overrun the city. Her route runs through burning streets, the catacombs underground, and eventually Dracula’s castle.
Rose’s main weapon is the Vampire Killer whip, which she also uses to get around by swinging across gaps. There are seven weapon categories, plus relics that let you change how she fights.
The new Arcana system lets Rose seal defeated bosses inside tarot cards, which unlocks spells and special abilities. Familiar enemies like Death, Medusa, and Carmilla are back, and Joan of Arc turns up as one of the bosses.
The standard edition costs $29.99 in the US. The $39.99 Midnight Edition adds two costumes, the Family’s Grace relic, and a digital soundtrack and art gallery with 71 tracks and more than 100 pieces of artwork.
The free demo has been out since October 1 on Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch, and supported progress carries over to the full game.
KONAMI has acknowledged several technical problems at launch, including a PC startup issue tied to certain V-Sync and frame-rate settings. The publisher has provided temporary workarounds and is preparing a patch.
