Civilization 7 Devs Testing Option to Play Single Civ from Start to Finish

Civilazation 7

Firaxis shook up the Civilization formula with Civ 7's civilization-swapping system, where your empire evolves into different nations each era. Not everyone's on board with the change, so the studio is now testing ways to make the game feel more like classic Civ.

The Original Vision vs. Player Feedback

The transition mechanic was designed to encourage players to see games through to completion while adding historical authenticity—so the USA wouldn't exist during the agricultural revolution, and the Maya wouldn't be launching spacecraft. But the community had other ideas.

According to Firaxis, the team is currently testing the ability to play a single civilization across multiple eras. Players would choose any available civ and guide it through the ages. The developers note this has been one of the most requested features from the community.

More Changes Incoming

The studio is also testing "significant changes" to Legacy Paths and victory conditions. "We want to expand gameplay possibilities and offer numerous new paths your empire can follow to greatness and victory," the devs explained.

Community Testing Program

Players can help shape these changes through the newly announced Firaxis Feature Workshop. A limited number of participants will get early access to test builds and provide feedback before patches go live for everyone. The program launches in a few months.

What's Next

Firaxis warned that holiday season means smaller, less frequent updates as the team focuses on testing these major changes.

November 4 brings update 1.3.0 and the free Tides of Power content collection (available through January 5 on all platforms):

  • Phase 1: Two new civs (Tonga, Pirate Republic), new wonders, and leader Edward Teach (aka Blackbeard)
  • December: Leader Sayyida al-Hurra plus two more civs (Ottomans and Iceland)
