Remedy has revealed an unconventional progression system for Control Resonant. Rather than awarding Dylan experience points for completed missions or defeated enemies, the game upgrades the zones of paranormal-infested Manhattan itself.
Enemies
The Hiss encountered in the original Control are more powerful in Resonant — freed from the Oldest House, they've spread their influence across both people and the environment. The Mold, a bacterial threat from the depths of the Oldest House, has taken root in New York and builds up defensive layers against aggressors like Dylan. Mold won't seek him out, but attacks if he gets too close. Mold creatures are resistant to bludgeoning damage but weak to fire. Dense mold clusters generate spore clouds that apply status effects.
The most dangerous enemies are the Resonants — boss-tier threats. Defeating a Resonant grants Dylan a new ability, but also triggers a world change: new enemies appear everywhere, not just in that zone, and combat becomes harder. Mohov advises approaching Resonant encounters strategically, and notes they don't all need to be killed to reach the story's end.
A third paranormal force called the Patterning is also present, transforming environments into kaleidoscopic patterns visible in trailers. It influences Resonant bosses — the first Resonant, a massive face, attacks Dylan with hypnotic kaleidoscopic visions.
Control Resonant launches September 24 on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series.
