Death by Scrolling From the Creator of Monkey Island Hits Consoles on April 16

Death Scrolling

MicroProse and Terrible Toybox — the studio founded by Ron Gilbert — have announced that Death by Scrolling arrives on Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch on April 16 for $7.99.

The game originally launched on PC in October 2025 and is coming to consoles alongside a major update adding a new playable character, a new biome, and gameplay improvements.

Death by Scrolling is a roguelite set in Purgatory where the screen constantly scrolls upward — stopping isn't an option. Players choose a hero with unique abilities, fight monsters, collect gold, and try to save enough to pay the Ferryman for passage. The Reaper pursues the player throughout each run and can't be defeated — only evaded, tricked, and outpaced. A fiery boundary rising from below adds constant pressure.

Between levels, players can unlock upgrades, shop with eccentric merchants, and take on bonus objectives. Random elements keep each run unpredictable.

Steam reception has been mixed. The game holds 78% positive reviews, with players generally finding the concept interesting but the execution lacking. Common criticisms include repetitive runs, slow progression, limited weapon and bonus variety, and a durability mechanic that can leave players without gear mid-fight.

The game is available now on PC via Steam.
