Last week, Unfrozen Studio revealed the sixth faction for Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era—Schism, a group of renegade Alvari Elves who sought forbidden knowledge among the ruins of their Vori ancestors. Their pursuit of power opened a Rift to the Abyss, allowing them to summon eldritch creatures from beyond.
Schism is described by the developers as their "most unusual addition" to the Heroes universe. These exiles settled in frozen mountains and icy gorges, far from civilization, building a society based on rigid hierarchy, ancient rituals, and a relentless quest to reclaim lost Vori traditions.
Unique Faction Ability: Abyssal Communion
At the start of battle, the player’s army size increases based on their Communion level, which decreases daily but rises with victories. Each hero has their own Communion level, so players must strategically choose who to send into battle. Additional troops exist only during combat and vanish afterward—they cannot be transferred to other heroes.
Unfrozen Studio aimed to create a faction unlike any other in Heroes. Their inspiration came from hints in past games about creatures from otherworldly realms.
Creatures of the Schism: Eldritch Horrors
The faction’s units reflect their abyssal origins—tentacled monstrosities and cultists dominate their ranks. Their army includes:
- Arbitrators, who cast spells while seated in eerie chairs.
- Abyssal Overseers, wielding head-mounted tentacles in battle.
In Olden Era’s Early Access, six factions will be available: Temple, Dungeon, Necropolis, Grove, Hive, and Schism. The studio hasn’t ruled out adding more castles in future updates or expansions.
Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era is set to enter Steam Early Access before the end of 2025.
