It seemed that at the symbolic version 6.66 Bethesda and idStudio had completed the development of DOOM Eternal, but no: at QuakeCon 2024 they announced another feature - mod support on PC. You can try it right now.
Basic details:
- For the sake of mods, they made a special launcher: it allows you to view mods, download them, determine the loading order, launch a tool for creating mods, and also quickly roll back to the "vanilla" version of Eternal.
- Eternal's mod platform runs through Bethesda.net. But it seems that there will be no paid mods here, like in Skyrim or Fallout 4 - the FAQ page separately emphasizes that mods for Eternal are not part of the program for verified creators of Bethesda Game Studios.
- To create mods, you need to download a special tool through Steam - idStudio.
- It has separate system requirements - for example, it will require from 200 to 500 gigabytes of storage space (depending on the asset sets that you want to install with idStudio).
For the launch of the update, idStudio and select community members have prepared several mods for DOOM Eternal: for example, a remix of the main campaign with new locations and encounters, alternative skins for weapons based on QuakeCon, and a restored pistol.
Mods for DOOM Eternal are currently only available on PC (Steam and Microsoft Store). To try mods on Steam, you need to select the PC Mod Preview beta branch in the game properties in your library.
