Dragon Age: The Veilguard Relationship System

Dragon Age Veilguard

Dragon Age: The Veilguard will allow you to take a break for a heart-to-heart talk with your friends or to retire with your favorite character, as friendships and romantic relationships are of great importance in the game.

In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, each companion has a relationship scale with Rook. It is affected by many factors, including the protagonist's decisions, words towards companions, whether they help them or refuse to help them, and so on.

The title's art director Matt Rhodes emphasized that personal quests of allies also affect the relationship scale. For example, the chain of missions of Bellara Lutara from the Veil Jumpers faction runs parallel to the main storyline and complements it.

Game director Corinne Busche says that relationships are key to the game. And this is not just about love lines, but also about friendship. She emphasized that they wanted to show the development of relationships between companions and the protagonist, as well as between the allies themselves. Gradually, they will develop trust and find in each other something like a family.

As your relationship with a companion improves, you unlock skill points that can only be spent on that companion. Each companion has five abilities, but only three can be active.

Each romance has, as Boucher puts it, “its own unique flavor.” While some love affairs can be quite spicy and passionate, others will be more reserved. It all depends on the particular character Rook is developing feelings for — some are ready to get down to business right away, while others will feel extremely awkward, as they have never been in a relationship before.

Also, romances will not have gender restrictions like in Cyberpunk. All characters are attracted to other characters regardless of their identity. It is important to note that Rook is not the center of the universe - if you reject a companion's advances, he is free to start a relationship with someone else from the team.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard launches in the fall of 2024 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series.
