Epic Games Store has been on the market for seven years, but the game preloading feature only arrived recently. The official post about implementing this function was published on September 30, though media outlets only noticed it days later.
Now EGS users can download purchased games five days (120 hours) before official release. Naturally, playing will only be possible once the developer gives the green light — until then, the purchase remains stored on the device as an encrypted build.
Epic noted that preloading won't be available for all titles. To activate this capability, developers need to contact Epic Games directly.
As a reminder, Steam has had preloading functionality for years, and modern consoles support it as well. Previously, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney and general manager Steve Allison acknowledged that EGS still requires improvements.
