Gamescom 2026: The Biggest Games and Announcements to Watch

Hermitgamer Article Post

Gamescom 2026 has already reached a first for the Cologne event before its doors have opened. Organizers say every available exhibition area has been booked, after the venue footprint had already grown for the previous edition. The main event runs from August 26 to 30, with Opening Night Live taking place on August 25.

There is plenty for video game players to track before then. Xbox is bringing 25 upcoming games, Ubisoft has confirmed a playable Rayman Legends Retold demo, and the Future Games Show has another August broadcast planned. Gamescom is centered on PC and console releases, but gaming brands also reach audiences through other types of digital play. Betway is one example in Zambia, where its platform includes sports betting and a casino section for users searching for online casino Zambia. Back in Cologne, attention will turn to unreleased video games, new footage and the first public play sessions for several major 2026 and 2027 titles.

Gamescom 2026 Has Filled Every Available Exhibition Area

Gamescom takes place at Koelnmesse in Cologne from August 26 through August 30. Opening Night Live starts the festivities on the evening of August 25, while the exhibition halls open afterward for the main event.

Koelnmesse and game, the German Games Industry Association, said in July that every available area had been booked. Confirmed exhibitors named by the organizers include Xbox, Nintendo, Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, Capcom, CD Projekt Red, Sega, Bandai Namco, Konami, Krafton, HoYoverse, NetEase Games and Tencent Games.

Gamescom 2025 provides a useful point of comparison:

MeasureGamescom 2025 figure
Visitors 357,000
Countries represented by visitors 128
Exhibitors 1,568
Countries represented by exhibitors 72
Exhibition space 233,000 square metres
Trade visitors More than 34,000

The figures put the fully booked 2026 halls into context. Several publishers are bringing playable builds, and some games will be available to the public for the first time.

Opening Night Live Starts the Week on August 25

Geoff Keighley returns to host Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25, joined by Eefje “sjokz” Depoortere. The broadcast takes place before the exhibition opens and acts as the first concentrated run of trailers and announcements.

Two games have already been named in Gamescom's pre-event material:

  • METRO 2039
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past

Both are tied to releases expected in 2027.

METRO 2039 is especially worth watching during the week because its appearance is not confined to a trailer. Xbox also plans to have the game on its floor, where attendees will get a first Gamescom hands-on session ahead of its planned February 2027 release.

Opening Night Live will contain more than the two titles already named, but Gamescom has not published the complete running order yet. August 25 is therefore the first date to watch for games that have not appeared in pre-event announcements.

Xbox Is Bringing 25 Upcoming Games

Xbox has published one of the most detailed Gamescom plans so far. Its booth figures are:

Booth itemNumber
Upcoming games 25
Gaming stations 140

Xbox will also run live broadcasts on YouTube and Twitch with:

  • studio interviews
  • trailers
  • gameplay footage

The published game list contains several names likely to draw attention:

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4
  • Gears of War: E-Day
  • Minecraft Dungeons II
  • Fable
  • METRO 2039
  • STRANGER THAN HEAVEN
  • Alien: Isolation 2

Xbox is also marking 25 years of the brand during the event. Its Cologne plans include:

  • material drawn from earlier Xbox generations
  • upcoming releases
  • the return of Xbox FanFest

Several of the games will have their first public demos at Gamescom.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Brings 6v6 Multiplayer

Visitors will be able to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Xbox Series X. The Gamescom build centers on Core 6v6 Multiplayer, giving attendees access to standard small-team matches before release.

Match footage can answer several questions about play:

  • how quickly players cross a map
  • how weapons behave during sustained fire
  • how often movement mechanics appear in ordinary fights
  • how map routes work once six players are pushing against another six

Call of Duty demonstrations also tend to generate plenty of recorded gameplay from the exhibition floor. Anyone following Gamescom remotely should therefore have more material to examine after the first public sessions begin.

Gears of War: E-Day Will Have Its First Public Campaign Demo

Gears of War: E-Day has a specific reason to be on a Gamescom watch list. Xbox says the event will host the first public playable campaign session for the game. Its release is scheduled for October 6, 2026, putting the demo only weeks ahead of launch.

The series is closely associated with several combat traits:

  • chest-high cover
  • heavy weapons
  • close-range fighting

E-Day goes back to the beginning of the Locust War and follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago during its early events.

The timing is useful too. A late-August demo for an early-October release is likely to resemble the version buyers will receive more closely than footage shown a year or two before launch.

Once people have played it, several questions should be easier to judge:

  • enemy behavior
  • weapon feedback
  • encounter size
  • the pace between firefights

Minecraft Dungeons II Will Also Be Playable for the First Time

Xbox is using Gamescom for the first public play sessions of Minecraft Dungeons II as well. Xbox's event announcement points to three parts of the returning formula:

  • weapons
  • loot
  • cooperative fighting

Tougher enemies are also mentioned.

A public demo should reveal more about:

  • enemy density
  • equipment drops
  • attack effects
  • interaction between two players when fights become crowded

Gamescom attendees will get access before launch, so footage recorded in Cologne may become the first lengthy look at ordinary play rather than edited promotional clips.

Fable Gets a Live Gameplay Theater Presentation

Fable is taking a different route. Playground Games will conduct a live gameplay theater presentation for the public rather than putting the same playable demo on rows of machines.

Xbox says the presentation will include three combat options:

  • melee weapons
  • ranged attacks
  • magic

Viewers can also watch for several details during the presentation:

  • how quickly the player moves between attack types
  • how enemies respond to hits
  • how much space fights use
  • how the camera behaves in crowded encounters

The theater format gives Playground Games tighter control over what is seen than a free-play demo would.

METRO 2039 Heads Back to Post-Apocalyptic Moscow

METRO 2039 appears in both the Opening Night Live plans and Xbox's booth announcement. Xbox says Gamescom will host its first hands-on demo at the event, with release planned for February 2027.

The new entry returns to post-apocalyptic Moscow. A playable section should answer questions about:

  • gun handling
  • resource use
  • enemy encounters
  • the balance between underground areas and trips above ground

Its presence in two parts of the week gives it more exposure than most of the games announced so far. New footage could arrive during Opening Night Live on August 25, followed by reports from people who play the booth build after the halls open.

STRANGER THAN HEAVEN Has an Unusual Combat Idea

STRANGER THAN HEAVEN is another first-time public demo at the Xbox booth. The game follows Makoto Daito and moves through several Japanese cities and time periods. The Gamescom build will cover three of them.

One mechanical detail gives the demo extra interest: the player controls Makoto's left and right sides separately in combat. Recorded play should explain that system better than a written description.

Gamescom footage may reveal whether the control method changes:

  • positioning
  • combos
  • reactions to attacks coming from different angles

It is the kind of mechanic that benefits from people getting their hands on a controller.

Alien: Isolation 2, Halo and More Fill Out the Xbox Booth

Xbox's announced booth games also include:

  • Alien: Isolation 2
  • Halo: Campaign Evolved
  • Forza Horizon 6
  • The Blood of Dawnwalker
  • Turok: Origins
  • STAR WARS Zero Company
  • Crowsworn
  • Alien Deathstorm
  • Castlevania: Belmont's Curse
  • Genigods: Nezha
  • Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy
  • Terrible Lizards
  • Valor Mortis

Three of those games have specific booth activities or material attached to them:

  • Halo: Campaign Evolved revisits the campaign of Halo: Combat Evolved with revised visuals and gameplay.
  • Forza Horizon 6 will let visitors try its Drift Attack activity.
  • Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is set to feature a public playable version of National Championship Air Races.

With 140 stations on the floor, Xbox has enough room to put hands-on play at the center of its booth plans.

Ubisoft Is Bringing a 20-Minute Rayman Legends Retold Demo

Ubisoft has now put firm details behind its Gamescom plans too. Rayman Legends Retold will have a 20-minute playable session built around:

  • the first level
  • a dragon ride
  • a returning musical level

The booth will also have 15 two-player couch co-op stations.

The new version of the 2013 platformer contains:

  • 3D visuals
  • a new story
  • fully voiced cinematics

Ubisoft's booth opens to visitors from August 27 through August 30 in Hall 6.1.

Ubisoft also plans studio panels and live sessions tied to:

  • Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced
  • Assassin's Creed Shadows
  • Rainbow Six Siege
  • Anno 117: Pax Romana
  • The Division 2
  • Rayman Legends Retold

Selected sessions are scheduled for streaming between August 26 and August 29 through Ubisoft's YouTube and Twitch channels.

Future Games Show Returns on August 26

The Future Games Show at Gamescom 2026 begins on Wednesday, August 26 at 19:00 CEST. Nick Apostolides and Angela Sant'Albano, who play Leon S. Kennedy and Grace Ashcroft in Resident Evil Requiem, will host the broadcast.

Games already named for the program are:

  • Tides of Annihilation
  • Onimusha: Way of the Sword
  • NO LAW

The broadcast is set to contain:

  • world premieres
  • announcements
  • studio interviews

The Future Games Show program continues after the main presentation:

ProgramTiming and role
FGS Live From Gamescom Follows the main broadcast with reporting from the Cologne floor
FGS Best Of Gamescom Airs Sunday, August 30, with booth visits, interviews and material gathered during the week

For viewers who cannot travel to Cologne, these broadcasts provide another route to games that may receive little or no time during Opening Night Live.

Indie Games and Speedruns Have Their Own Dates

Gamescom also has separate programming for smaller studios and speedrunning fans:

ProgramSchedule
gamescom awesome indies show Scheduled during Gamescom
gamescom GDQ August 28–30, with programming beginning at 10:00 each day and close to ten hours of live speedrunning per day from Friday through Sunday

The GDQ event is Games Done Quick's first event of this kind in Europe. Runs will also be transmitted through GDQ's online channels.

Players who follow speedrunning may therefore have reason to keep watching Gamescom after the largest announcements have already aired.

What Is Still Unknown Before Gamescom 2026

A long participant list does not mean every publisher has revealed its games. Nintendo, Capcom, Electronic Arts, Sega, Bandai Namco, Konami, CD Projekt Red, Tencent Games and several other companies are confirmed for Gamescom, but the amount of information published for each one varies.

That distinction matters during the remaining weeks before August 25. A confirmed company name should not be treated as confirmation that a particular unannounced game will appear.

Several parts of the Gamescom schedule already have firm material attached to them:

  • Opening Night Live has METRO 2039 and new Witcher 3 material on its early list.
  • Xbox has 25 games and several first public play sessions.
  • Ubisoft has a timed Rayman demo and multiple studio talks.
  • Future Games Show arrives on August 26.
  • gamescom GDQ follows later in the week.

The published schedules still leave room for games that have not been named. By the time the Cologne halls close on August 30, some titles now known only through trailers will have been played by thousands of visitors, and several names absent from the current program may no longer be secret.
