Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel transporting players to Emergence Day — the most important event in Gears internal history. Creative Director Matt Searcy stated E-Day will immerse fans in the atmosphere of previous installments while playing like a modern release.
Most Ambitious Project Yet
According to Searcy, this is their most ambitious project, built from scratch on Unreal Engine 5. They're returning to the very roots — Marcus and Dom's first encounter with the Locust — while gameplay should feel fresh even to series veterans. E-Day celebrates both past and future.
Focused Single-City Setting
Earlier Gears games never fully immersed players in the death and devastation-filled Emergence Day. When writing Gears of War: E-Day's story, The Coalition specialists had foundation material while finding room to introduce new elements and ideas. Searcy emphasized that diving into Emergence events returned the team to the spirit and dark aesthetic of early games.
E-Day promises a more focused adventure telling what happened to planet Sera's inhabitants on Emergence Day. To help players better feel this massive incident's impact, the game takes place in only one city — Kalona, one of the first settlements falling to the Locust. The story unfolds over several consecutive days, letting players intimately know the city: downtown, historical monuments, military bases, and even forested outskirts.
Marcus and Dom's Friendship Origin
E-Day offers more than just pure horror from the Locust horde attack — it focuses on the friendship birth between Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago. While the creative director didn't elaborate deeply, he raised expectation levels higher, believing this story can become one of the best in Gears history — certainly the most poignant and emotional, watching that brotherly bond between Marcus and Dom form.
Gears of War: E-Day is preparing to launch on PC (Steam) and Xbox Series X|S in 2026.
