Google launched Playground on October 7, 2026. The experimental platform lets users create playable browser games by describing what they want in plain text, with no coding experience required. Creators can test a game right away, change it with more prompts, and share it with others.
Playground is part of Google Labs and supports both 2D and 3D game ideas. Users can start from a blank project, adapt a starter prompt, or follow guided instructions to build their own.
After the first prompt, users can keep talking to the AI to change characters, environments, physics, and gameplay rules, then test those changes in the browser. There's no traditional development workflow to go through.
Games can stay private, be shared through a direct link, or be posted to the public Explore gallery, where ratings and player activity help other users find them. Some games support multiplayer and leaderboards. With Google Play Games profiles, users can pick a custom handle, follow creators, and save favorite games.
Google and Unity Are Developing Unity Spark
Alongside Playground, Google announced a partnership with Unity to build Unity Spark, a separate AI-assisted game creation platform that will connect to Playground.
Unity Spark is aimed at creators who want more control than simple prompt-generated games allow. Planned features include advanced gameplay mechanics, higher-fidelity 3D graphics, and integration with the Unity runtime. It will also connect directly to the Unity Asset Store, so creators can use thousands of assets made by artists.
Unity CEO Matt Bromberg said the goal is for people to make original interactive games, with tools that work for hobbyists, artists, modders, and experienced developers alike. He was clear that the project isn't about generating copies of existing games from a single instruction.
"This isn't about 'one-shotting'," Bromberg wrote.
Games built with Unity Spark are expected to be playable on Playground.
Playground Is Available Now in the US
Playground is available in the United States to users aged 18 and older. Games run in the web browser and can be played on laptops and smartphones.
Creating games is free, and qualifying Google AI subscriptions come with higher creation allowances. Google hasn't said what the exact limits are for each tier.
Unity Spark isn't publicly available yet. Unity plans a closed beta, with a wider release expected later in 2026. Creators can join the waitlist on Unity's website.
