Ubisoft Toronto is a division of Ubisoft that is currently involved in the production of two remakes (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Splinter Cell), as well as xDefiant and Star Wars Outlaws. The studio has a lot of work to do, but that hasn't prevented a big wave of layoffs there.
Ubisoft Toronto is parting ways with 33 employees. A spokesperson for the corporation commented on the layoffs as follows:
"Ubisoft Toronto has decided to undertake a point-by-point revamp to ensure that the studio can meet its ambitious plans. Unfortunately, this will impact the roles of the 33 team members who will be leaving Ubisoft. We are committed to providing them with extensive support, including redundancy payments and help with finding new jobs."
The Ubisoft spokesperson also assured that the layoffs will not affect Ubisoft Toronto's current projects: the Splinter Cell remake and other games where the studio is involved continue to progress toward release at the same pace.
The layoffs at Ubisoft Toronto seem especially surprising against the backdrop of recent news about Sands of Time: just a month ago, the Toronto-based team announced that they would be helping with the development of a new version of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. It seems that when a team has more work to do, it needs more employees, not less...?
Some estimates put the total number of layoffs in the gaming industry for 2024 at over 10,800.
