In late 2025, Paradox Interactive transferred Cities: Skylines 2 support to a new studio — the Finnish team Iceflake Studios now handles the city builder. Developers recently released a blog post partially revealing their first patch contents.
February Release Planned
According to the team's message, the update should release in the second half of February, provided "everything goes well." It contains quite a few changes, some based on long-standing community requests. For now, Iceflake only highlighted visual-related adjustments, but will later discuss mechanics and more.
Key Changes in Upcoming Update:
Asset Color Customization — Players can change asset colors. Currently available only for buildings, vehicles, and objects, but developers plan to add tree, plant, and other landscape element coloring in the future.
Redesigned Interface — Cities: Skylines 2's interface will be reworked for better clarity. The learning process will be simplified, and some icons changed to be more expressive and easier to understand contextually. The toolbar underwent the most serious redesign: now with more rounded shapes and more visible requirement indicators.
Improved Lighting and Weather — Both daytime and nighttime map lighting will improve, sky textures refreshed, and cloud appearance frequency adjusted. Fog settings will also be fixed — now tied to weather conditions or cloudiness. See the pictures below - Before and After!
Realistic Winter Climate — Climate on maps will be shown more clearly. If previously cities had no snow during winter, now there'll be plenty. "Previously, even during snowstorms, plots and lawns remained suspiciously clean. We fixed this with our characteristic Finnish perfectionism," developers wrote.
Future Improvements — The team is already working on improving other environmental aspects like ground textures and the ability to place trees closer together. The studio warned not all these adjustments may make it into the nearest update.
In-Game Encyclopedia Coming — Additionally, work continues on an in-game encyclopedia with built-in search. The directory will collect all information necessary for gameplay. However, the feature won't be ready for Iceflake's first patch release — it'll roll out sometime later. The game is available on Steam.
