Ordinary Oddness: Announcement of a New Open-World RPG from Tencent

Ordinary Oddness

Tencent Games subsidiary COSMICPUP STUDIO has announced Ordinary Oddness, an open-world action RPG built in Unreal Engine 5. The studio released 22 minutes of gameplay covering the game’s supernatural setting, exploration, and real-time combat, and pre-registration is already open.

The game is set in Elysian Skies, a floating city above a sea of clouds where humans and supernatural beings called Mythoids live side by side. Mythoids live openly as part of everyday life in the city, and they cause plenty of strange incidents.

Players take the role of a Consulting Investigator certified by the Mythoids Investigation Agency. Working out of an office on Breezeway Lane, they take odd jobs from humans and Mythoids alike, gradually piecing together the city’s history and the secrets behind how the two groups came to coexist.

In the footage, ordinary city streets give way to supernatural areas where the usual laws of physics don’t always apply. Locations shown include the ruined Nightingale Theater and the city’s annual Mythoid Day parade, which draws hundreds of supernatural residents.

Fights play out in real time, with blocking, perfect dodges, and timed character switching. Players can chain attacks and combine different abilities during encounters. Bosses are based on urban legends, and each has its own attack patterns, mechanics that change mid-fight, and multiple phases. The announcement points to two combat sequences from the gameplay demo.

The footage also introduces Luminar, a character tied to one of the story chapters. COSMICPUP STUDIO released a separate music video for Luminar’s theme song, “Little Monster.”

Ordinary Oddness is coming to PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store, and WeGame, as well as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its Steam page lists the game as free-to-play, with single-player, MMO, and online co-op tags. The developer hasn’t said how multiplayer will work.
