Sidetrack Games, currently handling Payday 2's ongoing support, has announced an upcoming engine upgrade. Visuals won't change, but the technical foundation gets a significant overhaul.
The new Diesel 3.0 engine moves Payday 2 to 64-bit architecture, eliminating memory-related crashes. The game also switches from DirectX 9 to DirectX 11, reducing VRAM usage to 1.2 GB and improving performance on budget GPUs. Total file size drops from 86 GB to 32 GB, and SSD load times improve.
An open beta for Diesel 3.0 runs on Steam from June 30 through late July. Sidetrack warns that the scope of changes will likely introduce new bugs and break some existing mods, though the team plans to assist modders with fixes.
Payday 2 is available on PC via Steam.
