Reikon Games has announced RUINER 2, a follow-up to their 2017 cyberpunk brawler. No release date has been set yet.
The sequel shifts away from the original's top-down shooter format toward a full action RPG with deeper systems and co-op support.
The setting returns to Rengkok — a grim industrial megacity where corporations control everything, including their workers' deaths. Dying is a contract violation here; the system is designed to keep people alive, suffering, and profitable.
Players take on the role of a hacker who hijacks the bodies of other fighters, called Shells. Multiple Shells can be controlled and switched between mid-combat, each with a distinct fighting style and skill set. New Shells are unlocked by defeating bosses.
Combat is fast and demanding — enemies overwhelm with numbers, so chaining abilities across Shells is essential. Skills from different Shells can be linked into powerful combos, and the same principle applies in co-op: up to three players combine their rosters and build synergies together.
Gear — weapons, armor, and implants — draws on each Shell's limited resources: energy, processing power, and memory. Items can be upgraded through crafting, but upgrades carry risk and can alter equipment in unexpected ways. Each Shell also has its own progression tree with branching ability upgrades, while the hacker's own "karma" levels up a neural network that strengthens the entire roster.
The developers confirm there will be no pay-to-win mechanics. An endgame with escalating difficulty and high-value loot is also planned.
RUINER 2 is coming to PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.
