If the visual style of Inkulinati or Pentiment appeals to you, Scriptorium: Master of Manuscripts is worth a look. The game launched yesterday and is already sitting at 98% positive reviews on Steam.
In the story mode, players create a character and take commissions from influential patrons across the kingdom — battle scenes, romance illustrations, love letters, ransom notes, maps, and more, all set against a backdrop of royal drama and daily gossip. The workshop can be decorated with furniture, lighting, plants, rugs, and other details. Players can also adopt a pet — a cat, a dog, or a small dragon.
A sandbox mode strips away the client work entirely, giving players access to all assets and tools to create freely. Every element is inspired by illustrations from real historical medieval manuscripts, and compositions are built by dragging and dropping elements into place.
Early player reaction reflects the accessibility of the creative tools — one reviewer noted that despite having no artistic talent, they could easily produce beautiful and funny illustrations.
Scriptorium: Master of Manuscripts is available on PC via Steam.
