Soulframe: 17 Minutes of Gameplay

Soulframe 1

At TennoCon, the Digital Extremes team responsible for Warframe spoke in more detail about the upcoming free-to-play action RPG Soulframe. The studio has also prepared a lengthy gameplay demo.

Let us remind you that in the fantasy world of Soulframe you will become the Messenger who is destined to lift Oda’s curse. This way he can restore a forgotten culture and bring back memories to the people of Alki. To do this, you need to awaken the power of your ancestors and defeat dangerous monsters.

The show began with a scene in which a mother gently rocks her baby while the tiny protagonist is in her arms. Already at this moment, gamers are invited to customize the primary appearance features for the hero. More options for customization will open as you progress.

They also showed a new Ancestor - the rat witch Verminia. She is best at creating potions and elixirs, and will also help you customize cosmetic items. As the developers specified, the collected ancestors will live in the other world, where you can always turn to them. There, the player is free to start making items, change equipment, pet a huge wolf, and so on.

The public was not left without battles. They showed both a skirmish with ordinary humanoid enemies and with the boss Nimrod. He commands lightning and wields an electrified staff. To stay alive, gamers must carefully monitor the actions of the enemy. According to the team, there will be several meetings with Nimrod.

Soulframe creative director Geoff Crookes shared that closed testing had a big impact on development. Already in the fall, Digital Extremes plans to allow more users to participate in testing. "It looks pretty rough at the moment, but that's part of our style. Feedback is very important to us and we do take it on a regular basis," Crooks emphasized.

He told GamesRadar+ that he expects Soulframe to be compared with the creations of FromSoftware. It's all about the "soul" from the name. The team went through many options for the title, but only Soulframe was able to reflect the essence of the game (about restoring the soul of the world, searching for the souls of ancestors, and so on). Therefore, Digital Extremes had to make double efforts to highlight the originality of the project. The authors of the fantasy action RPG do not intend to compete with the masters of their craft from FromSoftware.

According to Crooks, Warframe and Soulframe have a lot in common - because of this, he views these titles as sister titles. However, there are also plenty of differences. While Warframe can be described as "fast-paced, hyper-stylized chaos", Soulframe is slower and its setting less dark. Also, the focus of the upcoming game is on individual enemies rather than juggling a whole bunch of enemies to focus on at once.

Soulframe doesn't have a release date yet. Among the confirmed platforms so far only PC, but in the future it is expected to launch on all current devices.
