Square Enix has announced a full development restart for Dragon Quest 12, originally revealed in spring 2021 as The Flames of Fate. The game now carries a new subtitle — Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams.
Executive producer Yosuke Saito explained that the original version ran into numerous obstacles, and after ongoing discussions with series creator Yuji Horii about what the mainline Dragon Quest experience should truly be, the team decided to start from scratch. The logo and subtitle have been updated to reflect the new direction.
Despite the restart, the developers shared the first story details after five years of silence. Horii described Dragon Quest 12 as the story of a young hero who sets out on an adventure to uncover the mystery behind visions that came to him in dreams. The game will retain the iconic character designs of the late Akira Toriyama and music by Koichi Sugiyama.
No release date has been set. Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams is in development for PC and current-generation consoles.
