Steam Introduces Language-Based Game Rating System

Steam Reviews

Valve has rolled out a significant update to Steam's user review system, implementing separate rating calculations for different languages rather than relying solely on global scores.

The new system affects games with more than 2,000 publicly visible reviews that include at least 200 reviews written in a single language. When these thresholds are met, Steam will display language-specific review scores to users based on their primary language setting.

Addressing Regional Differences

The change addresses a long-standing issue where players from different regions often had vastly different experiences with the same title. According to Valve, these disparities can stem from various factors including translation quality, cultural references, network connectivity issues, and other region-specific problems that weren't reflected in previous global rating systems.

"Users from different regions may have vastly different experiences from each other for the same game," Valve explained in their announcement. The language-specific approach allows Steam to better capture sentiment from distinct player groups and provide more relevant information to potential buyers.

Implementation Details

Games meeting the review criteria will display their language-specific scores prominently on store pages, with an option to view detailed breakdowns by language. Users who prefer the traditional global rating system can adjust their preferences in Steam's store settings to revert to the overall review score format.

Valve emphasized transparency in the rollout, noting that the higher review thresholds compared to the standard 10-review minimum for overall scores ensure confidence in language-specific ratings before displaying them to users.

The update represents Steam's ongoing effort to refine its recommendation system as the platform continues expanding its global reach across diverse gaming communities.
