Frost Giant Studios has finally released Stormgate. The project should return the RTS genre to its former greatness. For two weeks, access to the game can be purchased along with additional content packs, but starting on August 13, the strategy will be free for everyone.
So far, Stormgate has been released in Early Access format. Over the course of the year, the game will be enriched with additional units, new missions will be added, and the balance will be adjusted. However, now all the main mechanics and several modes are ready and waiting for players.
Angels and Demons
The plot is simple - humanity is almost destroyed after the invasion of the world by demonic invaders. The arrival of a technologically advanced angelic civilization did not bring salvation - only more problems.
Now three races are fighting for survival. The player must become the commander of one of them. The local story will be presented through campaigns, the first for the Vanguard, the last stronghold of humanity. The developers include the authors of StarCraft 2 and Warcraft 3, so we can expect at least an attempt to reach the scenic heights of cult strategies. Even the introductory video shows the influence of the Blizzard Entertainment school.
Guns and Magic
The authors have collected futuristic war machines, buildings made of heavenly light and the power of the fiery magic of demons in one setting. This allows them to not be held back in creating units and their abilities. The developers are trying to make the new RTS friendly to newcomers, but also deep enough for veterans of the genre and the eSports arena. Here's what Stormgate already has:
- Three factions with unique units and mechanics: Vanguard, Infernals and Heavenly Armada.
- Fights in 1v1 format on seven maps.
- Fights in 2v2 format.
- Experimental “Turf War” mode in MOBA style.
- Leaderboard.
- Six maps with cooperative missions for three players.
- Five heroes for cooperative play. The first one is free, with access to all progress. The rest can only be upgraded to the fifth level, and then you will have to pay $10. A similar principle was used in StarCraft 2 Co-op Commanders.
- Six single-player campaign missions for the Vanguard. The first three are a free prologue, the rest are sold for money. The developers will release the sequel gradually. In the future, it will be possible to play the campaign in co-op.
- The first pack of units of the third tier.
Homage or Copy
At first glance, Stormgate looks like a remake of Warcraft 3 crossed with StarCraft 2, where all of Blizzard's intellectual property was erased with an eraser. Although players, out of habit, call people Terrans and the Heavenly Armada Protoss. However, the developers also brought something of their own.
The game is built on the Unreal Engine 5, but it works in tandem with SnowPlay technology from Frost Giant. This should provide "unique, flexible gameplay." There is a macro panel for quick access (QMP), automated control groups and BuddyBot have also been introduced, which are designed to greatly simplify management compared to the oldies of the genre.
In 2025, it is planned to add a map and mode editor to the game. The toolkit will be expanded to create full-fledged mods, your own campaigns, and even for creating units. The demo of the editor is planned for the end of 2024.
Ambition
Frost Giant has far-reaching plans. The creators want to turn Stormgate into a real e-sports discipline. The first step is the launch of an in-game tournament system in 2025. Leagues will then be created to compete around the world.
Below is a list of future updates. New content will be added every few months to ensure players don't feel like they're missing out.
Stormgate is available on PC (Steam), and from August 13, anyone can install the strategy for themselves.
