For decades, video games have employed non-playable people, or NPCs, as static guides, merchants, quest-givers, and background fillers. They are repetitive, scripted, and often repeat the same phrase regardless of the player's choices. But that is changing. As AI grows, especially in natural language models and generative systems, our interactions with game characters will be more dynamic and personalized. The structured nature of games is about to give way to reactive, open-ended settings with remarkably realistic characters.

In the early days of gaming, NPCs were coded with a few lines of conversation and basic actions. Although they were helpful, they rarely aided in immersion. Think about the characters in The Legend of Zelda that would only say one thing no matter how many times you tried to talk to them. As the games evolved, so did the expectations. Players started demanding more important choices and interactions with the characters they played.  

AI is involved. Since machine learning and large language models can now provide context-aware, real-time replies, developers may already begin incorporating these systems into their characters. Studios are already trying this out. Consider AI Dungeon, where the story shifts based on player choices in real time. Also, think of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which lets players chat spontaneously with non-player characters thanks to AI updates. These early experiments suggest that smart people can create large-scale, emergent gameplay. 

Spinando recently showed how independent and AAA developers use conversational AI in storytelling. This highlights a growing trend in the industry. Characters are aware of context, nuances, and even your tone, so you may soon be speaking directly to them instead of choosing dialogue options. Imagine building relationships with your squad members in a war game that evolve based on the conversations you have. You can also question a suspect in a detective game just like in real life. You can ask anything you want, without picking from a list of answers. 

This allows for deeper immersion, but it also presents challenging questions. How can the speech of AI characters be controlled in multiplayer or online environments? What about making sure their behavior fits the game's tone or plot? Game developers must balance freedom and control. This way, players can enhance the plot instead of hurting it.

Next is the performance side. Characters driven by AI need more memory and computing power, particularly if they are speaking in real time. Some studios are trying out server-side solutions. Others use hybrid systems. These systems mix AI with pre-written content. They aim to save resources and still keep a cinematic feel.  

However, the shift has already started. Instead of just reacting, AI personalities will remember, adapt, and maybe even surprise you. Your party member might recall a decision you made three hours prior and bring it up at a pivotal moment. If you continually stealing from a store, they can get angry. These are not gimmicks; they are the narrative gaming of the future.

There will soon be no more dead NPCs. Then come mentors, friends, foes, and total strangers that you might actually care about—not because the script demanded it, but because they seemed real.
