The Spirit of the Samurai is a 2D action game that stands out above all for its distinctive doll-like design. In a new trailer, the developers revealed the approximate release dates.
The main character is a samurai Takeshi, who defends his village from attacks by demons and the undead. The game is based on Japanese mythology and folklore, and the locations will include ruined settlements, mountain caves, abandoned cemeteries, and so on.
The key feature of The Spirit of the Samurai is its unique stop-motion animation, like in puppet cartoons. It is inspired by the works of animator Ray Harryhausen, a legendary special effects specialist who created stop-motion animation for films in the mid-20th century. However, in The Spirit of the Samurai, it seems that all the effects are digital - real dolls were not assembled for the game.
The main features of the gameplay include the following:
- Three playable characters: samurai Takeshi, brave little spirit Kodama and warrior cat Chisai. They have different sets of skills and combos.
- Different weapons - katana, spear and bow.
- A leveling system that allows you to not only improve your skills, but also create your own combos.
- Dynamic AI that makes all fights unique.
- Metroidvania elements.
The development is being handled by Digital Mind Games, a studio that specializes in 3D animation for various types of media and has been working since 2001, but does not have any particularly noteworthy projects behind it.
The release of The Spirit of the Samurai is scheduled for autumn 2024. The only platforms available so far are PC (Steam, EGS).
