Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow has a release date—the stealth franchise's VR entry sneaks out of the shadows December 4. The game is coming to PlayStation VR2, Quest 2 and 3, plus SteamVR-compatible headsets.
Return to The City
The Thief series takes place in a distinctive universe blending magic, gothic architecture, steampunk elements, and horror undertones. Legacy of Shadow brings players back to the grim yet atmospheric City. You'll play as a thief orphaned by the tyrant Ulysses Northcrest, uncovering a sinister conspiracy with guidance from Garrett's voice, performed by Stephen Russell.
Classic Thief Gameplay Meets VR
Developer Maze Theory aimed to preserve Thief's signature gameplay loop. The protagonist lurks in shadows, knocks out enemies, wields a bow with various arrow types, and swipes anything not nailed down. According to the devs, levels are expansive and support multiple approaches. VR adds immersive touches like blowing out candles through your headset's microphone.
Not the First VR Attempt
This isn't the franchise's initial VR experiment. In a PlayStation blog post, Eidos-Montréal creative director Steven Gallagher revealed that during development of Thief (2014), the team built a demo for Project Morpheus—the early PlayStation VR prototype. The studio lacked sufficient experience at the time, resulting in a less-than-stellar outcome, Gallagher admitted.
