Total War: Shogun 2 Remaster Pulled from Sale

Total War Shogun 2 Remaster

A few days ago, MATABOO, working with Creative Assembly and SEGA, released a remaster of Total War: Shogun 2, and fans didn’t like it. Within a couple of days it had an “Overwhelmingly Negative” rating on Steam from more than 3,000 user reviews. SEGA has now pulled it from sale.

Most players called the remaster an insult to fans. Their main complaints:

  • Obvious AI upscaling, which left textures looking bad and character faces distorted.
  • Poor optimization, with frequent performance drops despite unusually high system requirements.
  • Bugs that have been in the game for 15 years are still there.
  • The remaster adds new bugs of its own.
  • The 50 new minor factions are of questionable quality and barely differ from one another.
  • Steam Workshop support was dropped in favor of Mod.io.

SEGA and Creative Assembly put out a joint statement:

"We know that Total War: Shogun 2 – Complete Edition has failed to meet both your expectations and our own standards. We’ve seen your feedback, comments, and reviews, and we agree that the current level of quality is unacceptable.

As a result, we have asked platform holders (Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store) to remove the game from sale and restore the original version while we investigate these issues. Players who already own the remaster will still be able to access and play it.

We are working closely with our development partner to identify the causes of these problems, make improvements, and bring Shogun 2 – Complete Edition up to the quality standards that players expect from Total War."

SEGA hasn’t said how long the fixes will take. One Steam user doubted they’re possible at all: “Unfortunately, even with the substantial discount offered during the first month of sales, I don’t see how they can fix this situation... Replacing all the textures, recreating the cutscenes (this time actually by hand), and fixing both old and new bugs would essentially require making an entirely new remaster.”
