World's Edge has announced The Viking Sagas, a new DLC for Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition launching this fall. The expansion adds three new civilizations — Danes, Saxons, and Varangians.
Faction Breakdown
The Danes dominate water with fast longships. Their unique unit is the Jomsvikingr, capable of burning enemy buildings and ships. The Saxons specialize in fortified cities and territorial defense. Their unique unit is a heavy infantryman who opens with a thrown spear before closing into melee. The Varangians control waterways, pressure with cavalry, and serve as elite mercenaries. Their unique unit is the Jarl — a fearsome mounted warrior with throwing axes.
Three shared units are available to all new factions: Varangian Guard (deadly assault infantry that earns gold through raiding), Mounted Crossbowmen (hard-hitting but slow cavalry archers), and Longships (fast, powerful, and versatile warships).
Three Interconnected Campaigns
The DLC tells the saga of Harald Hardrada across three linked campaigns. "Prince in Exile" (Varangians) — Harald flees Norway to seek wealth and glory abroad, his ambitions threatened by the ruthless Empress Zoe. "The Harsh Ruler" (Danes) — flush with riches, Harald wages brutal war for Denmark and Norway, risking his people's loyalty in the pursuit of power. "The Last Viking" (Saxons) — Harald sets his sights on the English throne as an ominous omen lights the sky.
Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition is available on PC (Steam, Microsoft Store), PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series.
