Epic Games has released a preview of its redesigned launcher, and it says it built the thing with AI.
“Programming is hard. So instead, we vibe-coded a new version of the Epic Games Launcher with AI. It’s much faster and more responsive than the current one, and it has a new design.”
Epic warned that this first version has a limited feature set, though it already includes a shopping cart and checkout. The company describes the new launcher as a speedboat rather than a luxury yacht. That may be a dig at Valve boss Gabe Newell, who is known for his love of large yachts.
According to Epic, the store launches in 5.47 seconds on average, which makes it 46% faster than Steam. The company also promises quicker switching between the library and the store, lower resource use in the background, and better library management and downloads.
Epic first announced the overhaul in June at Unreal Fest, saying the new version would launch about five times faster than the old one. Nobody mentioned AI at that presentation.
Back in February, Steven Allison, Vice President and General Manager of the Epic Games Store, admitted the launcher was performing poorly and promised to fix it. The app was making too many requests to backend services whenever users switched sections, he explained, so pages took several seconds to load. Work on the improvements began late last year.
Epic hasn’t said when the new launcher will get its full release.
