Publisher Vertigo Games and developer Maze Theory have shared footage from the VR game in the Thief series. Both a brief trailer and detailed gameplay demonstration with developer commentary are now available.
The premise of Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow is as follows:
"This City is a haven of shadows, where the powerful keep the oppressed living in fear. The City's rooftops form a labyrinth above narrow, winding streets. The City Watch tirelessly patrols them, enforcing the iron will of Baron Ulysses Northcrest — a tyrant who crushes any resistance at its root. You are a skilled thief known as the Magpie. Orphaned by Northcrest's actions, you grew up on the streets and steal to survive. That was… until you discovered a legendary artifact holding the legacy of the past. [...] Uncover dark secrets and expose a sinister conspiracy…"
Legacy of Shadow features the familiar gameplay that Thief fans know — Magpie hides in darkness, pickpockets and eliminates guards, climbs rooftops, and uses a bow with various arrow types. Each objective can be achieved multiple ways. Immersion in the steampunk world is enhanced by VR tactility — for instance, candles can be extinguished with fingers or blown out through the headset microphone.
Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow launches in 2025 on SteamVR, PlayStation VR2, and Quest 2 and 3.
