Terraria has been around for quite a while now. People keep coming back to it, digging tunnels, building strange houses, fighting bosses they probably weren’t ready for. A big part of that is the multiplayer, as lots of players prefer to play Terraria with friends, as I do.

The problem is that lots of people play Terraria on different platforms. One person plays on PC, someone else on Xbox, another one on Switch. So the same question keeps popping up again and again. Is Terraria cross platform? It sounds simple, but the answer isn’t always as straightforward as people expect. Some versions of the game work together, others don’t.

That’s basically what my guide is about. We’ll look at whether Terraria supports crossplay, which platforms can connect to each other, and what you need to do if you’re trying to play with friends who aren’t using the same system.

Is Terraria Cross Platform?

As for 2026, Terraria crossplay is available only partly. You can play it together on similar platforms (Xbox One with Xbox Series, or PlayStation 4 with PlayStation 5), but you can’t play with your friends on different ones. Below I’ll clarify what I mean:

  1. If you play on a PC (Windows), you can connect to your friend on Mac
  2. If you play on Android, you can connect to your friend on iOS
  3. If you play on PlayStation 4, you can connect to your friend on PlayStation 5 (the same with Xbox)

However, Terraria doesn’t support cross platform, like PC and Console, Mobile and PC, or Console and Mobile. If you play Terraria on Xbox, you can't connect to players on PC. So, the answer to the question "Is Terraria crossplay?" is no, it is not crossplay.

You can play Terraria with your friend on a similar or the same platform using the Multiplayer feature in the main menu. One of you should create the world, and then others can join it. You can also invite your friend to the game. 

If your friends can’t connect to your server, check your multiplayer settings. Maybe you disabled the connection of other players.

How to Crossplay in Terraria on Mobile Devices?

You can connect to your friend using a Multiplayer feature. However, mind that you need a stable internet connection to crossplay in Terraria.

How To Crossplay on Consoles?

If you have a PlayStation, you can connect via the “Multiplayer” feature to any PlayStation owner. The same works with Xbox. You don’t need any additional mods, soft, or something else.

Will Terraria be Cross Platform in Future?

At the moment of writing the article, ReLogic has no plans to add new Terraria crossplay features. However, the game is constantly improving, and things may change in the future.

Why Terraria Does Not Support Full Crossplay

At first, it seems like Terraria should already have crossplay. The game is basically everywhere. PC, consoles, phones. Same worlds, same bosses, same endless digging. So the question appears pretty quickly. If everyone is playing the same game, why can’t they just join the same server?

One of the biggest issues is version differences. Updates usually arrive on PC first, while consoles and mobile devices sometimes get them later. That means the game code isn’t always identical across platforms. Even small mismatches can break multiplayer connections.

Platform networks also complicate things. Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo each run their own online systems. These networks don’t always interact smoothly with one another, even if the game itself supports multiplayer.

There’s also the fact that Terraria wasn’t originally designed around crossplay. When the game first launched, connecting every platform together simply wasn’t a common feature yet.

Because of that, crossplay has been slow to develop. The developers at Re-Logic are working toward synchronizing versions across platforms first. Once the game runs the same build everywhere, full crossplay becomes much more realistic.

So, Terraria has limited cross-play features, slowing players to play together on similar platforms like PC with Mac, or iOS with Android. However, it does not support cross-play on different platforms like PC and Consoles, or PC and mobile devices.

Right now ReLogic doesn’t plan to add new cross-platform features in Terraria, but that may change in the future.
