How to Craft and Connect Portals in Valheim

Create your portal system for fast traveling!

Valheim Portals

The world in Valheim is really big, made of numerous islands, and requires lots of time to travel. Even with a Longship, in general, you need up to 30-40 minutes to get back home from your adventures.

That is why Portals are really important in your adventures in Valheim, as you can teleport between locations in several seconds. I usually have up to 5-6 portals in my home to travel all around the map.

In this guide, you will find everything about the Valheim portals mechanic, how to craft them, connect with each other, and use them.

How to Unlock Portals?

Valheim Portal Recources

You can unlock portals during your adventures in the Black Forest. You need to defeat the first boss in Vlaheim (Eikthyr), get your first pickaxe, and mine some cooper in the Black Forest.

Get a cooper axe and chop birch trees to get fine wood. You will also need to loot some Burial Chambers to get Surtling cores. And the last, kill some Greydwarfs to loot Greydwarf eyes.

After you do all the steps above, you’ll unlock the receipt of the portal.

How to Create a Portal?

Valheim Portal Receipt

You need 3 main materials to build one portal in Valheim:

  • 20 Fine wood (loot from chopping birch trees)
  • 2 Surtling cores (get in the Burial Chambers in the Black Forest)
  • 10 Greydwarf eyes (loot from Greydwarfs in the Black Forest)

Remember that you need 2 portals to travel between them, so, it's better to get x2 of all materials to create 2 portals.

After you get all the required resources, you can build the portal using the Hammer within the working area of a Workbench.

Place 1 portal near your base (I recommend making a separate portal zone), and take the materials for the second one with you (with 10 wood for the workbench), so you can create a second portal whenever you need to access your base.

How to Connect Two Portals?

Valheim Portal Tag

Portals are connected with each other by tags, which you should set manually. After you place the portal – interact with it, and you'll be able to set a tag for it.

Connecting Portals In Valheim

The two portals with the same tags become connected to each other. So, before traveling, don't forget to set the portal and give it the simple tag, that you can remember easily.

I use numbers to mark my portals in Valheim, as they are really simple to remember. However, you can use any word or even phrase as a tag.

Moreover, I recommend to mark your portals on the map with their names. This way you will always know which portal you have, and in what areas.

Portal Restrictions

If you can’t teleport through the portal, perhaps you have the prohibited items in your inventory, that do not allow you to teleport. Usually, they are ores or metals. Here is the list of all objects preventing teleportation:

  • Black metal
  • Black metal scrap
  • Bronze
  • Copper
  • Copper ore
  • Copper scrap
  • Dragon egg
  • Dvergr extractor
  • Flametal
  • Flametal ore
  • Hildir's chests
  • Iro
  • Iron ore
  • Iron Pit
  • Mechanical springs
  • Silver

  • Tin
  • Tin ore

Conclusion

Portals in Valheim are a convenient and fast way of traveling. You can unlock portals in the Black Forest after you get some fine wood, Surtling cores, and Greydwarf eyes.

You can build a portal using a hammer, within a range of a crafting table. To connect 2 portals with each other, set the same tag for these portals after placing them.

If the portal is glowing with an orange color, but you still can’t teleport – perhaps you have the items that prevent you from teleporting, like ores or metals.
