The world in Valheim is really big, made of numerous islands, and requires lots of time to travel. Even with a Longship, in general, you need up to 30-40 minutes to get back home from your adventures.
That is why Portals are really important in your adventures in Valheim, as you can teleport between locations in several seconds. I usually have up to 5-6 portals in my home to travel all around the map.
In this guide, you will find everything about the Valheim portals mechanic, how to craft them, connect with each other, and use them.
How to Unlock Portals?
You can unlock portals during your adventures in the Black Forest. You need to defeat the first boss in Vlaheim (Eikthyr), get your first pickaxe, and mine some cooper in the Black Forest.
Get a cooper axe and chop birch trees to get fine wood. You will also need to loot some Burial Chambers to get Surtling cores. And the last, kill some Greydwarfs to loot Greydwarf eyes.
After you do all the steps above, you’ll unlock the receipt of the portal.
How to Create a Portal?
You need 3 main materials to build one portal in Valheim:
- 20 Fine wood (loot from chopping birch trees)
- 2 Surtling cores (get in the Burial Chambers in the Black Forest)
- 10 Greydwarf eyes (loot from Greydwarfs in the Black Forest)
Remember that you need 2 portals to travel between them, so, it's better to get x2 of all materials to create 2 portals.
After you get all the required resources, you can build the portal using the Hammer within the working area of a Workbench.
Place 1 portal near your base (I recommend making a separate portal zone), and take the materials for the second one with you (with 10 wood for the workbench), so you can create a second portal whenever you need to access your base.
